Shad at the Pejepscot Falls Dam Brunswick, Maine 6-12-26
Drone video shot by Corey Bayrd on April 12, 2026 showing American shad vainly attempting to pass upstream of Brookfield’s Brunswick Topsham dam in Brunswick, Maine. In one frame seen at here there are approximately 275 fish and during the entire migration season the ineffective fish ladder will only pass 0-90 shad. Additional stills at this link show hundreds and thousands of blueback herring (similar to alewives), none of which will use the fish ladder but all of whom are trying to get upriver of the dam
Assignment Maine: Merrymeeting Bay from Maine Public
They're slippery. They're slithery. And while they totally look like underwater snakes, eels are, in fact, unique fish that can breathe through their skin and even survive out of water. James Prosek tracks the life journey of Eli the Anguilla eel as she (yes, she) travels her mysterious "backward" migration from the sea to fresh water and back again.
